"When we are young, what happens is not nearly as important as what we think happens. Perhaps that is true even when we are not so young." - from Robert Ebert's 1995 review of the film "Hope and Glory"
The Fabulous 50's

Some of my favorite things from the 50's were I Love Lucy,
Mighty Mouse, Mr. Potato Head (remember using a real potato!) Burma Shave
signs, listening to Elvis 45s on my Hi-Fi and of course riding my
bike. Check out this great web site for your favorite
remembrances of The Fabulous fifties.

The original Burma-Shave (the shaving cream that smelled like a soap) signs began appearing in 1926 on highways and by the 50's there were 7,000 strung along US roadsides. Burma-Shave's poet laureate was the shaving cream inventor's son, Alan Odell. Once Odell himself ran out of ideas, he commissioned a nationwide contest, producing not only volumes of catchy sonnets but also an advertiser's dream; universal brand awareness. In 1963, Burma-Shave became part of the American Safety Razor Co. and the decision was made to discontinue the product and the familiar highway signs.
Baby your skin
Keep it fitter
Or baby will get
Another sitter
I heard it praised
By drug store clerks
I tried the stuff
Hot Dog! It Works!
Doesn't kiss ya
Like she uester?
Perhaps she's seen
A smoother rooster!
Ben met Anna
Made a hit
Neglected beard
Ben-Anna split!
Bristles scratched
His cookie's map
That's what made
Poor Ginger snap!
Dinah doesn't
Treat him right
But if he'd shave
Dyna-mite!
Henry the Eighth
Sure had trouble
Short term wives
Long term stubble
Substitutes
Can let you down
Quicker than
A strapless gown
